RESOLUTION
REQUEST FOR THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES, THE COMMANDANT OF THE US MARINE CORPS, COMMANDER MARINE FORCES PACIFIC, GOVERNOR LINGLE, MAYOR HANNEMAN, STATE AND FEDERAL GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS, INCLUDING CITY AND COUNTY OFFICIALS AND NEIGHBORHOOD COMMISSIONS; TO REVIEW THE FULL PRESERVATION OF A NATIONAL HISTORICAL SITE ON THE WEST SIDE OF THE ISLAND OF OAHU, STATE OF HAWAII, BETTER KNOWN AS US MARINE CORPS AIR STATION EWA FIELD. THIS SITE WAS THE FIRST UNITED STATES INSTALLTION ATTACKED ON 7 DEC 41 BY THE ARMED FORCES OF THE EMPIRE OF JAPAN. TO BE PRESERVED AS A NATIONAL LANDMARK, BATTLEFIELD, AND MUSEUM/ RESTORED PARK.
Whereas,
MCAS Ewa is one of the first airfields in Hawaii, carved out of kiawe bush in 1925 and is currently 83 years old as of this year and
Whereas,
MCAS Ewa was a designated mooring site for the US Navy's dirigible program of the 1930's, and
Whereas,
MCAS Ewa was the first US facility attacked on Dec 7 1941 as a historical fact, and
Whereas ,
Four United States Marines:
Sgt William E. Lutschan, USMC
Sgt Karolo Micheletta, USMC
PFC William George Turner, USMC
PFC Edward Steven Lawrence,USMC
Were killed defending the MCAS in direct enemy action against the armed naval air forces of the empire of Japan, and
Whereas,
Two civillians:
Yaeko Lillian Oda, 6 years old
Francisco Tacderan, 34 years old
residents from the Ewa community, were killed by the armed naval air forces of the empire of Japan, and
Whereas,
MCAS Ewa was the major Marine aviation headquarters in the Pacific in WW2, and a staging and transit point for all Marine aviation assets moving into the combat zones of the South Pacific. It was also the place all Marine aviation assets returned to after hard combat against the air, naval, and ground forces of the Empire of Japan, and
Whereas,
MCAS Ewa is the birth place of Marine Fighter Sqaudron Two One Four, Better known as "The "Blacksheep", as well as other famous Marine aviation units and
Whereas,
MCAS Ewa Field should be considered for inclusion as a National American Battlefield by the National Park Service to be placed on the list of National historic places as a National Historic Landmark and
Whereas ,
MCAS Ewa Field is being considered by President of the United States to establish the airport at Ewa as a expansion of the Pearl Harbor National Monument and
Whereas,
The Naval Air Museum Barbers Point, The Marine Corps League, Flying Leatherneck Museum, Sen. Mike Gabbard, Rep. Kym Pine, Rep. Rida Cabanilla, Sen. Therefore be it resolved,
The Ewa Neighborhood Board would like to see Marine Corps Air Station at Ewa Field preserved in its entirety for posterity and become a public museum and place that may be reverently enjoyed by all citizens of the world to see and ponder sacrifice of past Marines, Americans, so that they may learn the lessons of history, and always ensure peace, as it comes at a cost.
