In 1998 I began filming and documenting as a volunteer our area community events for the Ewa by Gentry Community Association’s own television channel and eventual broadcast forPhoto Olelo Public Community Television including:

Barbers Point Redevelopment Commission meetings in preparation of approximately 2,000 acres of Navy property within the district now named Kalaeloa being relinquished to the state; I filmed the meetings to bring Commission advisory decisions back to the people for their viewing since it involved our being able to access the beaches and dedicate open space for specific public uses.

Ewa Neighborhood Board meetings when the Board did not have the funds to record its meetings and put on Olelo; I took initiative, volunteered, and filmed them.

When Weed and Seed was to be evaluated by the federal government for designation and implementation to our community in Ewa Beach, I filmed the initial meetings and documented the process until its adoption to what we know have today.

Various Easter egg hunts, Christmas parades, Halloween activities, drug-free events in both Waipahu and Ewa Beach as well as sporting events, fairs, public hearings on civic affairs and other gatherings were captured on film and all done without any compensation. I wouldn’t have it any other way for this was my passion- and still is, to have our community to be the most educated and well informed community in the state and I believe I have been successful at it and had the good fortune to work with many others who also contributed their time to bring these productions to us.

Mayor Harris had Vision Teams serve its communities during his term as mayor and I was very active on ours while this was of party to his administration.

I joined the Ewa Beach Lions Club sometime in 2000 and had to resign in 2005 due to scheduling conflicts. During that period, I enjoyed working with the James Campbell High School Leos Club on various community projects and facilitated a tobacco free grant with them to provide them with their own video camera and equipment to make Public Service Announcements.

In 2000 the Oahu Resource and Development Council was searching to fill a Board of Director position for the Ewa Region to address sustainability issues. I volunteered, was elected by the Board, and have been active ever since through today working on numerous projects to ensure our environment retains its viability.

Cleanup of Illegal Dumping Site in Waipahu - KHNL News Story

Restoration effort success story
. Berg is the Kapakahi Stream and Pouhala Marsh conduit for the Oahu Resource
and Development Council (ORC&D) serving as the Ewa District Director for the nonprofit organization.  ORC&D does not
endorse or support any candidates for public office and the news story was conducted as Berg being a concerned Ewa Beach
citizen to address the illegal dumping in lower Waipahu. The news story is not in any manner associated, implied, or affiliated with
any KHNL endorsement or otherwise and was independently produced for the KHNL purpose without any connection to Berg's campaign.

In 2001, many had brought to my attention concerns about dangerous conditions plaguing our various crosswalks and pedestrian matters overall. I co-founded the Ewa Pedestrian Coalition and secured a $2,000 grant to administer and facilitate public meetings to come up with solutions to make our crosswalks safer. Some new crosswalks were installed, some old ones repainted, and we offered advisement to the Department of Transportation for possible remedies endorsed by those who attended the meetings and through results garnered from a published community survey in the local newspaper.

In 2002 I purchased a condominium unit within the Ewa by Gentry Community Association (EBGCA) and shortly thereafter joined the Association serving as its Vice President on the Board of Directors. Prior to that, I volunteered on various Security Watch functions and contributed to the long range vision planning committee that was being spearheaded by then EBGCA Board President Rich Hargrave who now serves as our Ewa Neighborhood Board Chair.

In 2003 I was elected to our Ewa Neighborhood Board and am currently serving as Chair of the Legislative Committee. One of the best ideas in my opinion our Board came up with under the term when Tesha Malama was Chair of the Ewa Neighborhood Board, was to do everything in our power to stimulate the growth of new jobs for our immediate area and we supported what is called a Dinner Train. By merely utilizing the old railroad right-of-ways that still exist, we could connect Waipahu to Haleiwa by a tourist driven passenger sight-seeing train that would offer local cuisine and traverse our wonderful agricultural lands and revitalize that industry. We found an entrepreneur who was willing to finance it and this would have brought many jobs to our area and be a real asset for those wanting to get to the North Shore without having to drive as well. The idea is still alive and that is one project I would like to see come to fruition since it would not take any government monies to operate and be solely run by the private sector.

The Hawaiian Railway Society in Ewa has been operating a Pearlridge Express Train during the holidays as a children’s ride in partnership with the mall to raise funds to restore the historic railway line and its operations for the public domain. I have along with my girlfriend, Edlynn Taira, been active over the last six holiday seasons volunteering on various evening shifts posing as Conductors and Engineers running the train to sustain these efforts and provide families with lifelong holiday memories.

Most recently, in my previous capacity as an office manager for our State Representative Office, I was assigned to be the designate for that office to serve on the Kalaeloa Advisory Team. We have been actively meeting for the last 5-6 months. Together with others from elected offices and neighboring boards including community leaders and nearby organizations, we have been analyzing under the Hawaii Community Development Authority parameters, led by Kalaeloa Director Tesha Malama, ways in which to bring this jewel of a region to greater service and productivity for our community, region, state, and tourists alike.
